On Tuesday 17th March 2026, Bury College proudly hosted the Foundation Studies category of the Greater Manchester (GM) Skills Competition, welcoming students from twelve colleges across Greater Manchester. The event brought together creative, enthusiastic, and hardworking learners from Foundation Departments across the region, each showcasing the unique products and services they have spent months developing.

Inspired by this year’s theme of local heritage, students researched the history, culture, and landmarks of their own towns, using their findings to design imaginative pieces that could be sold to raise money for charity. From handcrafted items to thoughtfully designed services, every submission demonstrated teamwork, independence, and enthusiasm.

Displaying creativity, confidence, and community

Learners embraced the opportunity to meet students from other colleges, sharing ideas, discussing their creative processes, and gaining inspiration from each other’s work.

Throughout the day, students presented their creations to a judging panel, explaining the story behind their ideas, the roles they played within their group, and the skills they used to bring their products to life. The competition also included a Greater Manchester themed team building challenge, where groups worked together to create a large decorative beehive. This piece will be proudly displayed in the Bury College Garden throughout the year.

Lisa-Marie Sanderson, Lecturer in Foundation Studies at Bury College, celebrated the spirit of the event, saying:

“It’s about having fun, having a good time and celebrating the Foundation Departments for everything they do.”

A valuable experience for our learners

For students, the competition provided far more than the chance to highlight their work. It offered a meaningful opportunity to build confidence, practise communication skills, work as part of a team, and gain experience in presenting to industry professionals.

The day also highlighted the importance of collaboration, with students building connections with learners from other colleges and taking pride in leading their own projects. With the event being entirely student-focused, participants were able to take ownership of their ideas from concept to final presentation.

A team effort across the Bury College community

The success of the GM Skills Foundation Studies event was made possible thanks to the dedication of staff, students, and partners from across the College and Greater Manchester.

The Foundation Studies Department played a key role in organising and coordinating the day, supported by colleagues from across the College community. Students from the College Supported Internship programme welcomed guests, taking on meet-and-greet duties, and assisted visiting colleges throughout the event. Meanwhile, the College's Steps to Work and Work Wise groups provided food for participants and visitors.

Judges from across the region were tasked with the difficult job of selecting winners from an outstanding array of creative and thoughtful entries.

A focus on skills and development

Participating students not only displayed their creations but also strengthened essential life and work skills, from communication and planning to problem-solving and teamwork. The experiences gained throughout the day will support their personal growth long after the event, helping them feel more confident and prepared for their next steps.
