A former Bury College Hairdressing Apprentice has come full circle, embarking on an exciting teaching career which will see him inspire the next generation of Hairdressers.
A few years ago, after losing her husband and her job in a short space of time, Deborah, a current adult learner at Bury College, made the decision to retire. As time passed, however, she found herself looking for a new sense of purpose.
“I wanted a job again, but I wanted to do something that I enjoyed. A Lunchtime Assistant role came available at my grandchildren’s primary school, so I applied for it”, she commented.
Deborah secured the role and soon wanted to progress, but having worked in office settings most of her life, didn’t have the qualifications needed. She therefore decided to enrol as an adult learner on the Supporting Teaching and Learning Level 2 Certificate at Bury College.
“I spoke to a colleague who had done the course and I decided to apply. I’ve never really done any exams or studied before, so I wasn’t sure I’d get in, but I did!”
Deborah is now thriving on her course and developing the skills she needs to take on more responsibility at work.
“I’m up to date with my assignments, and so far, I’ve passed them all. I had an observation recently, which was good. I'm doing well and I'm proud of myself. I feel like I've got a new lease of life, and I’ve found something at a time when it felt like I’d lost everything.”, she adds.
Deborah studies in Bury College’s purpose-built adult learning centre. She praises staff for their support on her journey.
“Everything has been explained so well to me, I know what I’m doing, tutors are approachable and I feel comfortable in the lessons. Everybody interacts well with each other, and we have a laugh in class. It's just lovely. I feel welcomed.”
Deborah’s story is inspiring, showing true resilience and highlighting the idea that learning never ends.
Her advice for other adults thinking of embarking on their own learning journey is as follows:
“Don’t overthink it. Just do it and take it one step at a time. At 60, I thought I was too old to do something like this, but I just went for it and it’s given me so much confidence.”
