National Apprenticeship Week was an exciting and inspiring time at Bury College, filled with activities that helped mark the occasion and celebrate the exceptional talent, dedication and achievements of Apprentices.
Public Services students from Bury College recently gained valuable real-world experience by working alongside Greater Manchester Police (GMP) as part of a Youth Scrutiny Group project.
The initiative, which ran over several months, saw students volunteering their time to review and provide feedback on police stop and search procedures. Their input played an important role in helping GMP strengthen engagement with young people across the Bury community.
Among the students who took part were Evie Later and Christina Manseau-Craig, both of whom aspire to join the police. The experience gave them a deeper understanding of the role and the responsibilities involved.
Evie and Christina said:
“We really enjoyed seeing what the police do in their jobs and how they carry out stop and searches with the public. We were able to give our opinion to the police, and to know that this mattered was a big thing. We want to join the police in the future, and this gave us a real insight into how important it is to get this part of the job right.”
As well as gaining an understanding of police procedures, students developed important skills in communication, teamwork and confidence that will support them in their future careers.
To mark the end of the project, students were presented with certificates by Chief Inspector Barton and Sergeant Andy Vernon in recognition of their commitment and contributions.
Chief Inspector Barton said:
“The Youth Scrutiny Panel is a fantastic opportunity to open dialogue between the young people in our community and the police, which helps to create positive public perceptions of policing and improve public trust and confidence.”
This successful partnership reflected Bury College’s ongoing commitment to offering real world learning opportunities that support student development while making a meaningful difference to the local community.
