National Apprenticeship Week was an exciting and inspiring time at Bury College, filled with activities that helped mark the occasion and celebrate the exceptional talent, dedication and achievements of Apprentices.
A former Bury College A-level student is pursuing a remarkable career as a journalist and weather presenter working on the hugely popular news programme, BBC North West Tonight.
Emmanuelle Lhoni has used her extraordinary skills, knowledge and experience to progress in a very fast-paced and demanding industry and is enjoying working in the hub of regional news. The 26-year-old, who lives in Manchester, believes her passion, ambition and sheer hard work has led her to the position she has always aspired to have.
Talented Emmanuelle left Bury College in 2013 after achieving A grades in Drama and Theatre Studies and French and a B grade in English Language and Literature. From there, Emmanuelle progressed onto the University of Leeds to study Broadcast Journalism and graduated with a 2:1 BA Honours Degree, before completing a Masters in International Journalism at City, University of London in 2017.
During her time at University, Emmanuelle completed a wide range of work experience placements which gave her a unique insight into the industry. These industry placements included undertaking researcher positions on BBC’s hit show Rip Off Britain, radio station Key 103 and factual production company Blakeway North.
Once she had completed her university studies, Emmanuelle established a career in London with the BBC. She secured a placement working on BBC World Services with the Future Voices Scheme for bilingual reporters. She also worked on the popular programme The Newsroom as well as working with the digital team BBC Stories where she was involved in a powerful investigation about skin lightening. Emmanuelle’s time in London also included working with BBC Africa’s innovation team based in Nigeria, as well as the BBC Minute radio news programme which was broadcasted on 25 stations in 17 countries around the world.
Emmanuelle decided to move closer to home and is now based at Media City working for North West Tonight.
Emmanuelle said, “I am really enjoying working as a BBC journalist and weather presenter, both roles are different but I enjoy both as I am developing new skills, gaining experience and growing as an individual. I loved my time at Bury College, that’s where I got my first taste of independence and I was well prepared for university. I am so proud of what I have achieved, I am doing things I would have never thought possible. My future career goal is to progress into new reading or presenting.”
