The UAL Foundation Diploma in Art & Design course is designed to confidently prepare you for a full creative degree as your future direction. You will be encouraged to experiment and take risks in order to develop your creative skills and critical independence in Art and Design supporting direct progression on to higher education.

The course provides you with an exciting opportunity to devlop innovative, ambitious and experimental outcomes through a series of creative workshops and independent exploration.  Learnt skills will be applied to investigate a fusion of personal ideas and the ethical considerations that shape current creative practices.

As the course and your personal development evolve you will have the opportunity to increasingly focus on one or a combination of these specialist fields/creative industries:

  • Fine Art
  • 3D Design
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • Graphic Design
  • Photography
  • Digital Design

The course is split into three stages with an additional progression module running alongside the main units:

  • Creative futures (progression module)
  • Stage one: diagnostic investigation
  • Stage two: developing a specialist practice
  • Stage three: final major project

Creative Futures is a module which runs alongside the initial units, where you explore and research progression choices such as higher education or employment.

There are no exams on this course, assessment is 100% based on a coursework portfolio. The final project is internally assessed and externally moderated by the awarding body UAL and offers UCAS points.

The UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is free for eligible learners. Those under 19 are able to access tuition under the current funding guidelines.

For those over the age of 19 on the day the course starts, you are eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan, which means you won’t pay any up-front costs for tuition. Please contact admissions on 0161 280 8200 for further information.

You will also engage in the Positive Futures Careers Programme, developing key employability skills through a diverse range of activities including work placements, volunteering, employer talks, industry study visits and employment and university fairs.

For Level 3 Diploma: 4 GCSEs at grade 9-4 OR 1 A Level pass or an equivalent Level 3 qualification. If Art/Design not studied at GCSE, need to present a portfolio of work.
