Overview of the Course

This course is taught at Bury College University Centre, with the qualification awarded by the University of Bolton. It provides you with an ideal opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge you will be using in your role as a Teaching Assistant (or volunteer Teaching Assistant). You will need to secure a placement (paid or voluntary) in the primary sector, to support your study. Throughout the course, with the support of your tutor, you will integrate the theory and practice-based elements of this programme.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry requirements include:

  •  Applicants will normally have a Level 3 qualification in an appropriate area
  • You must also have 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent) including maths and English
  • You need to be working in a school as a teaching assistant on a voluntary or employed basis and must have agreement from your head teacher about undertaking the programme
  • You will also have to attend an interview and receive a satisfactory
    enhanced DBS check (costing approximately £44)
  • If you do not have the normal entry requirements but have relevant work experience or an alternative qualification you may still be eligible for the course

You will be assessed by a variety of methods including: short presentations, reflections on observations/tasks carried out in the work place, case studies and essays. Your tutor will visit you in your place of work at various points in the course.

Special Features

This course can provide a route into teaching when followed by a relevant BA Hons top up, enabling you to work your way towards QTS.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

All students receive an initial allocation of 600 credits per academic year for printing and photocopying, additional credits can be purchased if required. Photocopying facilities are available in the LRC at an additional cost. DBSClearance will be required before commencing placement. Cost £44.00.

If you do not have a DBS, you will be required to have one before commencing placement. This will cost £44.00. If you do have a DBS, there will be an annual update service which is £12.
