Overview of the Course

The ‘Reading to a Child’ course is a workshop, accredited through the English Speaking Board. “Reading to children on a daily basis gives them the best start to life. Storytelling introduces structure and language patterns that help form the building blocks for reading and writing skills. Reading aloud combines the benefits of talking, listening and storytelling within a single activity and gets parents and carers talking regularly to young children.”

What topics will I study?

The topics covered include:

  • Choose a suitable story to read aloud confidently to your child or children
  • Help your child with learning to read
  • Learn hints and tips which help make this fun and easy to do
  • Read a story aloud and communicate with expression to a small group
  • Understand the purpose of book illustrations
  • Describe a special occasion or event with detail using descriptive language
  • Take part in conversations with others

Who is this course aimed at?

Reading to a Child (Entry 3) is designed to equip you with the skills to read aloud to a child. The qualification involves selecting a book to read to children with vocal and facial expression suitable for the age group. You will develop communication skills by working in a group with peers, tutors and support workers resulting in increased confidence and self-esteem.


This qualification can help you progress into further learning.

You will be asked to complete an initial assessment when you attend your enrolment.

This is a free course however an eligibility criteria applies. Cost if not eligible is £125.
