Overview of the Course

This is a one year course covering all aspects of hairdressing skills to enable progression to a Junior Stylist in industry. An enthusiasm for hairdressing is essential, in addition to personal qualities of motivation, good communication and dexterity skills. Mature students are welcome on this course. The skills include carrying out services such as shampooing, conditioning, styling, dressing and setting hair, cutting, perming and colouring.

What are the entry requirements?

Three or more GCSE at grades A*-D, including maths and English or a Level 1 qualification in Hairdressing and Beauty.

How long is the course and when can I start?

This course is for a duration of one year course starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will complete a comprehensive programme of study to enable you to achieve up-to-date hairdressing skills. This course is based around learning the theory then developing the practical skills. You will be assessed by completion of continual practical assessments, oral questions, assignments, and online external tests. Each module will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Whilst on your Study Programme, you will achieve the technical skills in the following services:

  • Reception Duties
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Consultation
  • Promoting Products and Services,
  • The Art of Dressing Hair,
  • Creating an Image Based on a Theme within the Hair and Beauty Sector,
  • Cutting,
  • Perming, 
  • Health and Safety,
  • Colour and lighten hair.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

You will develop a wide range of skills including: Customer service, dealing with diverse sectors of the public, organisation and time management skills, speaking and listening skills, written English language, maths/numeracy related money, time and estimating.

Work experience

At Bury College you will benefit from work experience as an essential element of your study programme, You will be supported to secure a work experience placement allowing you to gain hands-on work based industry skills.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

Enrichment opportunities include: Competitions classes, Master classes with industry experts, Employer input, Trips and visits to industry based activities, Inclusion in sporting/exercise activities, Tutorial sessions covering a range of topical issues including Prevent and British Values.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

Additional costs include a Level 2 kit which will cost approximately £150.00. Female uniform will cost £48.75 and consists of a tunic, leggings and ballet shoes. Male uniform will cost £7.50 and consists of a polo shirt. Own smart black trousers and smart black shoes complete the uniform. No trainers or sports shoes are allowed. You should have excellent personal appearance and communication skills, a professional manner, good attitude and commitment to achieve on this course.
