Overview of the Course

This course has been designed to meet the latest education reforms which are relevant to industry needs and are more rigorous with high quality practical learning. This qualification will also support your progress onto further education, university and employment. The skills include carrying out services such as shampooing, conditioning, styling, dressing and setting hair, cutting and colouring.

What are the career opportunities?

The Level 2 Technical Certificate in Hairdressing could lead to a job as a Hairdresser working in one of the following establishments: Hairdressing salon, Hotel, Cruise Ship. On completion, your progression route could be a Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing, Level 2 Technical Certificate in Barbering or an apprenticeship in a salon of your choice.

What are the entry requirements?

Three or more GCSE at grades A*-D, including maths and English or a Level 1 qualification in Hairdressing.

How long is the course and when can I start?

This is a one year course which starts in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will complete the mandatory assessment components of a theory based exam and a practical synoptic assignment towards the end of the course and additionally, you will provide evidence of work experience.

Whilst on your Study Programme, you will achieve the technical skills in the following services:

  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp,
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Plaiting and Twisting
  • Salon Reception
  • Colouring Hair using Temporary Colour
  • Creating a Hair and Beauty Image
  • Health and Safety
  • Working with Others

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

During the course you will develop a range of skills including customer service skills, dealing with diverse sectors of the public, organisation and time management skills, speaking and listening skills, written English language, maths/numeracy related money, time and estimating.

Work experience

At Bury College you will benefit from work experience as an essential element of your study programme. You will be supported to secure a work experience placement allowing you to gain hands-on work based industry skills.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

Enrichment opportunities include: Competition classes, Master classes with industry experts, Employer input, Trips and visits to industry based activities, Inclusion in sporting/exercise activities, Tutorial sessions covering a range of topical issues including Prevent and British Values.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

A Level 2 kit will cost approximately £150.00 A female uniform will cost £48.75 and consists of a tunic, leggings and ballet shoes. A male uniform will cost £7.50 and consists of a polo shirt. Own smart black trousers and smart black shoes complete the uniform. No trainers or sports shoes are allowed. You should have excellent personal appearance and communication skills, a professional manner, good attitude and commitment to achieve on this course.
