Overview of the Course

The Level 2 Diploma in Plastering is designed to further develop your skills and knowledge, enabling you to work in the industry as a trainee plasterer. You will have the opportunity to develop your tool skills and associated practical skills, and enhance your underpinning knowledge demanded of a plasterer within the construction industry. You will be required to complete a range of practical projects and develop your skills and knowledge through studying a range of subjects including Health and Safety, Trade Technology and other related subjects. You will also have the opportunity to continue to develop your knowledge and practical skills in both solid and fibrous plastering. Approximately 60% of the course is practical based and 40% is theory.

What are the entry requirements?

Level 1 Diploma in plastering with equivalent literacy and numeracy.

How long is the course and when can I start?

A full-time one-year course starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

Achievement of each unit is by internal testing undertaken by the lecturer. Each knowledge unit also has a mandatory series of questions produced by NOCN and managed by the lecturer. The practical assessment is set by the awarding body and controlled by the lecturer. You must pass all practical and theoretical elements of the programme to achieve this nationally recognised qualification. Theoretical and practical units include: Health, safety and welfare in the construction and associated industries (unless completed at Level 1), Understanding information, quantities, and communication with others, Understanding construction technology, Applying plaster materials to internal surfaces, Fixing dry lining and plasterboard products to interiors, Applying render materials to external surfaces.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

To be successful in a construction career you will need to get on with people from all walks of life, enjoy being part of a team and like working outdoors for some of the time. You will also be good at solving problems, using computer software, understanding instructions, getting things done on time and making decisions. English and communication skills are particularly important; you need to be able to listen carefully to identify the needs of customers, respond effectively to questions in an open and friendly manner and maintain written records of work completed. Carrying out calculations and problem solving is a daily feature of working in the construction sector, you will need to be able to accurately calculate the quantity and cost of materials from drawings, measure and set out to precise requirements and work to critical project timelines. You will also need to apply rations and formulae to standard units of weight, length, time and cost to prepare estimates and final costings.

Work experience

At Bury College you will benefit from work experience as an essential element of your study programme. You will be supported to secure a five day work experience placement allowing you to gain hands-on work based industry skills. Plastering students have previously secured high quality work experience placements at:

Study programme enrichment opportunities

Your Construction Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression to employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, course related study visits and career events.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

You are required to purchase PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that you must wear in all practical sessions; this will include a hi-visibility vest, a pair of gloves and safety goggles, all available to purchase from college at enrolment. In addition, you will also need to purchase a pair of steel toe capped boots.
