Overview of the Course

This work related qualification is the equivalent to two A Levels and will provide a progression pathway onto higher education, apprenticeships, advanced apprenticeships or employment across a wide range of industries. The course provides the opportunity to study all the different aspects of business, as well as improve your employability skills. You will develop good organisational and time management skills to meet regular coursework deadlines, communication skills to work in teams, and independent research and study skills that will be essential for higher education or the workplace.

What are the entry requirements?

Four GCSE grades A*-C (9-4), including English and maths or MM in BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Business.

How long is the course and when can I start?

This is a full-time, two-year course starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

The course consists of a range of mandatory, specialist and optional units studied over two years. You will be assessed by assignments set and marked by your tutors and tasks and written exams set and marked by Edexcel. Each individual unit is graded Pass (P), Merit (M) or Distinction (D) and your overall qualification will have two grades from PP to D*D*.

Mandatory units include:

  • Exploring Business
  • Developing a Marketing Campaign (task)
  • Personal and Business Finance (exam)
  • Managing an Event
  • International Business
  • Principles of Management (task).

There will also be two additional units.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

To be successful in a business career you will need to have good communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team. You will need to be good at problem solving; using creative thinking and decision making skills. You will be required to use Microsoft software and business calculations to record, report, and plan for the future. You will also need to understand instructions, and organise your time to meet deadlines. These things will be daily features of working in the business sector, and this course will help you to develop these skills.

Work experience

At Bury College you will benefit from work experience as an essential element of your study programme. You will be supported to secure a five day work experience placement allowing you to gain hands-on work based industry skills.
