Sustainable Travel

What Do We Mean By Sustainable Travel?

Transport is a significant source of CO2 emissions. Every time we travel in any form of vehicle, be it car, train, tram, bus or airplane we make a contribution to climate change as a result of the CO2 emitted. By choosing to travel more sustainably you can make a huge difference, significantly reduce your personal carbon footprint and help reduce the impacts of climate change. It also sets an example for others in the local community to follow.

But sustainable travel doesn’t just benefit the environment. Active travel such as walking and cycling can be a great way to build exercise into your day. Travelling by sustainable means can also save you money!

Sustainable travel options can be considered as follows:

Cycling & Walking

No Emissions! Great for the environment and also great for your health

Walking

Have you considered a walking partner? Do you know someone who lives near you and would they accompany you on the walk to and from College? Bury College encourages staff to meet and walk to work together.

The Walkit.com website is an urban walking route planner which provides you with a route between two points, including your journey time, calorie burn, step count and carbon saving. It’s quick, free, healthy and green. Go to the Walkit.com website now and download the Walkit.com app!

Cycling

Cycle sheds are currently available on the Bury College campus behind the Beacon Centre. Further sheds are planned for the Woodbury car park and next to the new Construction Skills Centre which is due for completion in autumn 2012. There are plans to add changing and drying facilities for cyclists on the campus.

In addition, secure cycle storage is available at most Metrolink and bus stations in Greater Manchester through the BLUC locker Scheme.

The CycleGM website is an online cycling journey planner, whether you’re new to cycling or simply want some new routes to explore, the CycleGM website is for you. They can help you get started, choose the right bike, join in local cycling events and even plan your next ride.

Bus, Tram or Train

If your journey is too far to walk or cycle, public transport is usually the next best option

By Bus: For the latest bus information visit www.tfgm.com and select Journey Planner, or call 0871 2002233.

By Metrolink: from any Manchester Metrolink station to Bury Interchange. Visit: www.metrolink.co.uk for more information.

Car Sharing

If you do have to travel by car, could you give someone a lift or ride as a passenger yourself?

Bury College will be promoting a car share programme and the details of this scheme will be added to this website very soon. The car share scheme will allow staff to research the possibility of finding another member of staff to car share with. Apart from saving staff money in these austere times it enables the college to reduce the carbon footprint and eases the car parking congestion.

Bury College Travel Plan

The aim of Travel Plans, as outlined by central government guidelines is to address the potential means of reducing reliance on single occupancy car use and encouraging the use of alternative forms of travel. The Bury College travel plan reports on the findings from the staff survey and offers some indications as to how to increase more sustainable travel.
