A Foundation Studies student recently started his dream work experience placement as an animal carer through his Steps to Work course. Reece Standish, 18, is now on work experience at Stay N Play Doggy Day Care Bury every Wednesday and Thursday as part of his Pathway to Employment course.

Our Foundation Studies programmes offer opportunities for students with additional educational needs to develop skills for a successful working life or independent living. The Steps to Work course allows young people to gain work experience while still accessing college support.

Reece started his studies with the department in 2019. Since enrolling, Reece has been developing his work-related skills, as well as getting further support with his English and Maths. As part of his course, he secured a placement at Stay N Play, maintaining the day care and doing activities with the dogs.

Reece said, “I love coming in and seeing the dogs. I love all animals so this is a great job for me.” Reece also shared how he had developed the skills he will need for future employment throughout his Steps to Work course. He has gained some practice handling the animals, as well as his teamwork skills and confidence.

Tammy Davies, Reece’s tutor and Assistant Curriculum Manager for Foundation Studies, said, “Stay N Play has provided a meaningful work experience for Reece – it is always a great feeling when you find an inclusive and supportive employer willing to help young people gain valuable work skills.”

Luke Morgan-Millington, Managing Director, said, “It’s been great to see Reece’s confidence grow whilst in his role! He has become a valued member of the team and it’s clear to see that he has a passion for dogs and the animals in his care. He is really finding his voice and gaining important team work skills through working with the rest of the team.”
