International Fitness Week at Bury College - 08-Feb-2010

Sport and Fitness students at Bury College became personal trainers during International Fitness Week.

International Fitness week took place from 1st to 7th February with the aim of inspiring individuals to keep fit. BTEC National Diploma Sport and Fitness students designed and conducted their own personal training programmes for fellow students and instructed them through a physical activity programme to improve fitness.

Bury College’s newly equipped Gym and Fitness Centre allowed students to get hands-on experience and learn about the different ways of getting fit. Tracy Shaw, Sports Lecturer, conducted the lessons and assessed the students’ abilities in communication, technique, programme design and instructing physical activity techniques. Tracy commented, “The students wouldn’t be able to get the hands-on experience if the facilities were not available for them. The facilities allow the students to gain the skills and experience they will need in future employment.”

Matthew Jones, former pupil of Withins High School, was one of the students to conduct a training programme. Matthew said, “Personal training is a really useful way to stay fit. It covers many different areas and allows individuals to be aware of their own fitness. International Fitness Week is important to encourage involvement in physical activity and help people stay fit.”
After completing his Sport and Fitness course at Bury College Matthew wants to further his education at University studying Sports Science and Exercise.
