Planning your revision

We’ve prepared a useful revision planner to support you in choosing when to revise different subjects, as well as identifying the topics you need to focus on ahead of your exams.

Use our planner to break your subjects down into manageable topics rather than whole units, as smaller chunks always feel more achievable. Think about the times of day when you naturally have the most energy; some people work best straight after school, while others prefer mornings or early evenings. Make sure you schedule in breaks, meals, hobbies, and proper downtime too. Rest is important as it keeps your brain sharp. And don't forget to add small rewards along the way. Finishing a topic could mean ten minutes of doing something that makes you smile.

Mix up your revision techniques

Reading your notes is a start, but using a variety of revision styles helps topics stick in your memory for longer.

Try combining:

  • Quick-fire quizzes you test yourself on.
  • Mind maps to link big ideas together.
  • Flashcards for key words, formulas or quotes.
  • Explaining a topic aloud as if you’re teaching someone else.
  • Past paper questions to practise exam technique.

Little and often can be more effective than marathon sessions.

Work in short, sharp bursts

Your brain loves to focus in small chunks.

A popular pattern is 30 minutes of revision, and then a 10-minute break.

If that doesn’t suit you, change the timings until they feel right. What matters is that you’re working with your concentration, not against it.

During your breaks:

  • Grab water.
  • Stretch.
  • Go outside for a minute.

Look after your body and mind

Good revision is not just about the work you do; it's also about how you feel. Even small healthy habits can make a big difference to how clearly you think.

Make sure you:

  • Eat well: have balanced meals and regular breakfasts.
  • Stay hydrated: drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Get enough sleep: aim for 7-9 hours per night.
  • Stay active: exercise helps reduce stress levels.

Quick wins you can start today

  • Tidy one folder or organise one topic.
  • Choose two subjects to focus on this week.
  • Write three flashcards.
  • Do one past paper question.
  • Ask for help on a topic you don’t understand.

Small wins build momentum, and momentum builds confidence.

You’ve got this

Revision is a skill, and like any skill, it takes time to properly master. Take it one session at a time, be kind to yourself. Remember, you’re building skills that will help long after the exams are over.
