Work Placements

Work placements are vital in preparing students for future employment. They allow students to gain practical, hands-on experience, and develop work-place skills to complement their course. Many students at Bury College benefit from work experience as an essential part of their course.

Work experience opportunities

Work placements are offered in various subjects including: Administration, Art and Design, Business, Catering, Childcare, Engineering, Foundation Studies, Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care, Media, Public Services, Travel and Tourism and Sport.

Case Study

Sophie Duckworth an Interactive Media student, gained the chance of a lifetime to work with card manufacturer Hallmark in their design studio. The former Tottington High School student created four Christmas card designs, two gift wraps and a short e-card animation as part of a live commercial brief. Sophie was chosen for the work experience opportunity because she showed lots of variety in her work.

"Working to a professional brief has helped me improve my skills. I’m really looking forward to the work experience as it will give me an idea of what working in a real studio is like."

Placement duration

The length of a work placement varies from course to course. Many students will undertake a work placement as part of the core provision of their course for at least one week during the academic year. Others have the opportunity of a one day a week placement on a termly basis.

Organising a work placement

By offering a work placement to a student at Bury College you will be helping them to gain vital knowledge and skills that can only be provided in a working environment. Many students gain full-time employment with their work placement company on completion of their course.
