Depending on your career aspirations and qualifications you will either complete a one year Diploma or a two year Extended Diploma. We can discuss this with you at your interview. Both courses are aimed at developing creative Art and Design skills which will enable you to pursue successful careers in the Art and Design world. In the first year of the course you will develop a broad range of skills to give you the knowledge and confidence to specialise in your chosen Art and Design discipline. This will allow you to build your confidence to make independent creative decisions. On successful completion of the one year Diploma you will have the opportunity to further your studies and progress onto the second year and work towards achieving the Extended Diploma. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels and allows you to achieve the UCAS points you require to progress onto Higher Education, Apprenticeships or Employment. These courses are intended for those who wish to pursue a career in Creative Design and the Arts and offers a broad introduction to this exciting and dynamic field by giving you the underpinning knowledge and skills required to be successful. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to explore a variety of creative skills and techniques through both course led briefs and live brief opportunities. These courses are designed to encourage you to make confident informed decisions and judgements regarding your work and how best to develop your creative skills in a positive independent manner, leading to visually exciting personal responses. You will need to possess sound artistic ability, good communication skills and the desire to express yourself creatively.
On completion of this course you may progress onto a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, an apprenticeship or to Higher Education studying a range of Art and Design subjects at degree level with a view to pursuing a career in your selected subject. Career opportunities may include: Web designer, photographer, animator, illustrator, fashion designer, graphic designer, advertising, art education, ceramics designer, fashion designer, fine artist, freelance designer/art worker, graphic designer, illustrator, interior designer, production designer, social media and teaching.
At least five GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C) to include English and Art or Design or a Merit at a Level 2 Art and Design course. Please note that applicants who have a passion for Art and Design but who may not have had the opportunity to study an Art and Design GCSE at school will be considered for a place on these courses at interview along with a suitable selection of work.

During your first year of the Diploma and Extended Diploma you will study five cornerstone subjects of the design field: Painting and Drawing, 3D Design, Fashion and Textiles, Graphics and Photography. The emphasis will be on challenging your creativity, combining media and developing skills. You will also be introduced to industry standard design software skills that give you the opportunity to develop your ideas, skills and reflect on current professional practice. At the end of each year you will respond to a personal brief that will allow you to creatively develop and present an independent portfolio of work in your specialist field (e.g. Fashion, Textiles, Photography, Graphics, 3D or Painting and Drawing). In your second year of the Extended Diploma you have the opportunity to increasingly focus on one or a combination of these specialist fields. The intention is to support and challenge you in the development of your skills and explorations in an area of Art and Design you like best and will give you the knowledge and ability to progress to the next level in your journey. The Diploma is one year and the Extended Diploma is two years, they consist of projects and assignments that cover 9/13 coursework assessed units. Units are designed to develop your artistic skills and lead you to making personal explorations in a specialist artistic field of your choice through the course. At the end of each year, your final Art and Design project will give you the opportunity to express yourself independently in your chosen specialist field. This unit will be moderated to determine a final Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.
You will learn a large range of industry standard software skills and techniques, the hardware and software we provide is 100% industry standard and in line with current industry expectations. As well as being a very visually stimulating and creative course, we support the growth of your written and verbal communication skills, and teach you employment skills such as team work, time management, research techniques, reflective and lateral thinking.
At Bury College you will benefit from woek exzperience as an essential element of your study programme. You will be supported to secure a five day work experience placement allowing you to gain hands-on work bades industry skills. Your Art and Design Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression to employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, course related study visits and careers events.
You will need to purchase Art and Design materials, including sketchbooks and an Art Pack. There may be additional costs for coursework study visits.
