Overview of the Course

There are 1,817,049 employees in the construction industry and there is a shortfall of approximately 40,000 skilled employees. Therefore this apprenticeship framework has been designed to help meet the skills priorities of the sector. You will undertake the role of a bricklayer and will complete the following tasks; working on a building site, setting out structures and carrying out complex building works. This Level 3 apprenticeship programme is designed to further develop your skills and knowledge gained during your Level 2 Brickwork qualification and will enable you to work to an advanced level in the construction sector. Our courses have an excellent reputation with employers and help you to develop construction skills that will put you at the forefront of the job market. During your time at college you will be taught by staff who have not only had successful careers in industry themselves, but who also lead in shaping the UK’s construction and building services training sector. The content of the course includes: Confirming the Occupational Method of Work in the Workplace, Confirming Work Activities and Resources for an Occupational Work Area in the Workplace, Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace, Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace, Erecting Complex Masonry Structures in the Workplace, Erecting Masonry Cladding in the Workplace, Erecting Masonry Structures in the Workplace, Erecting Thin Joint Masonry Structures in the Workplace, Installing Drainage in the Workplace, Maintaining Slate and Tile Roofing in the Workplace, Placing and finishing Non-Specialist Concrete in the Workplace, Producing External Solid Render Finishes in the Workplace, Producing Internal Solid Plastering Finishes in the Workplace, Repairing and Maintaining Masonry Structures in the Workplace, Setting Out Complex Masonry Structures in the Workplace Setting Out Masonry Structures in the Workplace. Optional units will be chosen with your assessor to ensure you meet your scope of works that you will be carrying out with your employer. This course will involve 20% of your time to be dedicated to off the job training.

What are the entry requirements?

Initial assessment and diagnostic testing on maths and English will take place prior to commencement of apprenticeship and will need to achieve at least Level 1 (GCSE D-E standard) in both assessments for Level 2. Students must be employed within the industry.

Progression

Upon completion of this qualification you can progress on to a Higher National Certificate (HNC).

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are a vital part of your apprenticeship. They provide the essential knowledge, skills and understanding needed to operate confidently, effectively and independently. Functional skills are available at Level 1 and Level 2 and the level you will work towards will depend on the previous qualifications you have achieved, the results of an assessment prior to your apprenticeship and the requirements of the apprenticeship you are completing. If you have not already achieved Level 2 English and maths you must study for and take the tests for Level 2 English and maths and achieve Level 1 English and maths for Level 2 Apprenticeship.

Assessment

As well as the college attendance, your assessor will visit you on a regular basis and support you with developing your electronic portfolio which is used as evidence in order to complete your apprenticeship as it brings everything together. You are assessed in the workplace by a qualified and trade-competent assessor who will help support you and your employer in achieving your qualification. Some elements are assessed by exam. At these meetings observations, question and answer sessions and reviews will take place.
