Overview of the Course

The Level 2 Bricklaying Apprenticeship will give you the work based training you need to progress into the industry. Studying on site in our specialist facility, in conjunction with extensive placement with employers, you will be ready to start your career. It is suitable for those who already work in this area as well as people who are actively seeking employment and training in this specialist trade. An Intermediate Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations (Brickwork) will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of routine carpentry related activities. You will be working in a construction environment where your duties could encompass many areas. The content of the course includes a range of mandatory units: Erecting Masonry Structures in the Workplace, Setting Out Masonry Structures in the Workplace, Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace, Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace, Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace, Carry out safe working practices in construction, Information, quantities and communicating with others, Building methods and construction technology, Interpret working drawings to set out masonry structures, Thin joint masonry and masonry cladding, Build solid walling, isolated and attached piers, Build cavity walling forming masonry structures. Optional units will be chosen with your assessor to ensure you meet your scope of works that you will be carrying out with your employer. This course will involve 20% of your time to be dedicated to off the job training.

What are the entry requirements?

Initial assessment and diagnostic testing on maths and English will take place prior to commencement of apprenticeship and you will need to achieve at least Level 1 (GCSE D-E standard) in both assessments for Level 2. You must be employed within the industry.

Progression

Upon completion you may wish to progress to Trowel Occupations (Bricklaying) Level 3. From an apprenticeship you can progress to Advanced Apprenticeship. After passing the Advanced Apprenticeship you can progress on to a Higher National Certificate (HNC).

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are a vital part of your apprenticeship. They provide the essential knowledge, skills and understanding needed to operate confidently, effectively and independently. Functional skills are available at Level 1 and Level 2 and the level you will work towards will depend on the previous qualifications you have achieved, the results of an assessment prior to your apprenticeship and the requirements of the apprenticeship you are completing. If you have not already achieved Level 2 English and maths you must study for and take the tests for Level 2 English and maths and achieve Level 1 English and maths for Level 2 Apprenticeship.

Assessment

As well as the college attendance, your assessor will visit you on a regular basis and support you with developing your electronic portfolio which is used as evidence in order to complete your Apprenticeship as it brings everything together. You are assessed in the workplace by a qualified and trade-competent assessor who will help support you and your employer in achieving your qualification. Some elements are assessed by exam. During these meetings observations, question and answer sessions and reviews will take place.
