Overview of the Course

This is a course for those who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities or ESOL as a second language. You will have the opportunity to develop independently for daily living, working life or further learning. Please note that because of national educational developments this course may be replaced by a similar programme of study.

What are the career opportunities?

Where appropriate, you may progress onto Entry Level 3 programmes including Workability, Supported Internship or employment to further explore employment options.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry is subject to interview, school/college reference, EHCP (if applicable) and initial assessments. You must be working towards Entry Level 2 and interested in further development of independence skills. Curriculum is tailored around the student group and individual outcomes.

How long is the course and when can I start?

A full-time one year course starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will study a range of topics including: Dealing with Problems, Managing Your Own Money, Individual Rights and Responsibilities and Preparation For Work. You will participate in work experience as part of your Study Programme and also study maths and English. The course units are assessed through observation and written tasks with a pass being awarded at the end of a successful unit. All parts of the course need to be passed to progress to a higher level course at Bury College.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

You will gain specific and transferable employability skills whilst on the course, these may include, working as part of a team, communicating with customers and presenting yourself. You will also develop skills in solving problems, using computer software, understanding instructions, getting things done on time and decision making.

Work experience

Work experience is an essential element of your study programme and you will be supported in a short placement enabling you to gain the necessary and required employment skills sought after by employers alongside you considering possible future career aspirations.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

Alongside external visits planned as part of the curriculum, you will have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities and sport enrichment sessions. These sessions are optional.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

There will be additional costs for visits and trips and Personal Protective Clothing or equipment for Work Experience.
