Overview of the Course

NEBOSH Courses at Business Solutions, Bury College

NEBOSH courses provide delegates with a good foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors and staff with health and safety among their day to day responsibilities. The qualifications are widely taken as a first step towards a career in health and safety and are accepted by IOSH – the institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

Employers benefit from:- A safer workplace – protecting people from injury and loss of life and helping the organisation avoid prosecution, litigation, absence costs and loss of reputation, wherever they operate. Assurance – demonstrating that the workplace is committed to working towards recognised Health & Safety standards. Return on Investment – provides a practical set skills that bring real value to the modern global workplace

Delegates can choose to take the examined units in any order, and will receive a certificate denoting their achievement for each unit that they pass. When all units making up the qualification have been successfully passed, the student will receive the award parchment.

NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety

This qualification is established as a leading health and safety award for the construction industry, with over 12,000 successful candidates since 1989.

It is aimed as Supervisors, Managers and those with a role under the Construction Design and Management regulations 2015 within the construction industry who are required to ensure that activities under their control are undertaken safely. It is likely to prove useful for those concerned with the management of buildings who may need to ensure that contractors are working safely. This qualification is also appropriate for supervisors and managers working in other industries such as utilities, and even broadcasting, where temporary workplaces are a feature of their activities.

This qualification demonstrates competence, which can help employers meet recognised standards, codes of practice and even win new business.

Unit NGC1 of this qualification (Management of health and safety) is common to the National Certificate in Construction and the National General Certificate. You do not need to sit Unit NGC1 again if you have already passed it within the last 5 years.

Entry requirements – There are no specific barriers, in terms of academic qualifications, skills or experience to do this course however, we would advise all delegates to have completed the IOSH Managing Safely or an equivalent health & safety qualification, as this will help delegates to have a basic knowledge of health & safety. It should be noted that currently the assessments are offered, and must be answered, in English only. The qualification includes a requirement to write a short report based on the candidate’s own workplace, which must also be in English.

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately. All units are mandatory. Candidates will need to pass all three units within a five year period to achieve the qualification:

  • Unit 1 – Management of Health and Safety (NGC1) is divided into 5 elements (listed below), all of which are classroom taught and assessed by a 2 hour written exam and consists of 10 ‘short answer’ questions (8 marks each) and one ‘long answer’ question (20 marks), all questions are compulsory. Delegate’s scripts are marked by NEBOSH external examiners. The course for this unit takes place 1 day a week for 6 weeks with a recommendation of 23 hours of private study time
