Overview of the Course

This course has been designed to meet the latest education reforms which are relevant to industry needs and are more rigorous with high quality practical learning and supports progression onto further education, university and employment. The course is designed for hairdressers wishing to develop advanced skills in specialist areas. The course is based around learning theory and knowledge and practising skills. An enthusiasm for hairdressing is essential, in addition to personal qualities of motivation, good communication and dexterity skills. Mature learners are welcome on this course.

What are the career opportunities?

Successful completion of this course may allow you to progress onto a Foundation Degree in Salon Management or employment in a salon of your choice. Career opportunities include hairdresser, salon owner, stylist, freelance hairdresser, cruise liner stylist, salon manager, manufacturer technician, salon receptionist.

What are the entry requirements?

Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing.

How long is the course and when can I start?

One year starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will complete a comprehensive programme of study to enable you to achieve advanced and creative hairdressing skills. This course is based around learning the theory then developing the practical skills. You will be assessed by completion of continual practical assessments, oral questions, self-reflection, mock examinations and an end external examination in both theory knowledge and practical skills. This course will also include a work placement. Whilst on your study programme, you will achieve the technical skills in the following services: Cut hair using a combination of techniques, Creatively colour and lighten hair, Creatively style and dress hair, Hairdressing consultation services, Hair colour correction services, Smoothing and strengthening systems. In addition, English and maths GCSEs depending on entry grades or age.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

You will develop customer service skills, dealing with diverse sectors of the public, organisation and time management skills, speaking and listening skills, written English language and maths/numeracy related skills including money, time, estimating.

Work experience

You will complete a structured work experience with monitoring visits from Bury College. A record will be kept for all your experiences whilst out on placement. Work experience is a compulsory part of this course and will include one day a week working within the industry as part of your timetable.

Enrichment opportunities include competition classes, master classes with industry experts, employer input, trips and visits to industry based activities, inclusion in sporting/exercise activities, tutorial sessions covering a range of topical issues including Prevent and British Values.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

A Level 3 top up kit will cost approximately £144 or full kit approximately £207. Female uniform will cost £48.75 and consists of a tunic, leggings and ballet shoes. Male uniform will cost £7.50 and consists of a polo shirt. Own smart black trousers and smart black shoes complete the uniform. No trainers or sports shoes are allowed. You should have excellent personal appearance and communication skills, a professional manner, good attitude and commitment to achieve on this course.
