This course will develop the basic skills required to become a Make-up Artist (MUA).
You could progress to Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Media Makeup Artistry or employment within the industry.
This qualification is suitable for anyone over the age of 16 years. You do not need any previous knowledge or experience in make-up to start this qualification. You will need five or more GCSEs including maths and English Language at grade 9-4 (A*-C) or a Level 1 qualification.
This is a one year course which starts in September.
The course is practical based and structured by individual units. These are assessed by online exams, assignments and practical observations. Each module taken will be graded on a pass, merit and distinction basis. The course is delivered to cover the following areas: principles of working in the make-up industry, anatomy and physiology, researching, developing and showcasing designs, applying make-up, creative make-up artistry, hair artistry.
You will develop skills in applying make-up and hair artistry. To be successful in a make-up career, you will need to communicate with people, enjoy working as part of a team and be prepared to constantly update your skills. English and communication skills are particularly important. You need to be able to speak and listen to people of all ages, genders and social backgrounds. English skills will be further developed and embedded within your study of the curriculum. Your understanding of maths will be put to the test when calculating timings and developing pricings of treatments, amongst other things.
This is an essential element of your Study Programme and you will be supported to ensure this takes place. You will be required to undertake two weeks structured work experience that develops skills and knowledge relevant to the qualification. This will allow you to gain exposure to the sector you wish to work in, start to develop the key employability skills and give you the opportunity to network with a view to gaining employment.
Visiting speakers will deliver additional workshops. Employer involvement is a formal requirement of this qualification, which will enhance and enrich your knowledge and understanding of the industry. The information gained will also allow you to make an informed choice about your future employment. Trips and visits will be planned to support your achievement. A ‘World of Work’ week is also scheduled where new skills are introduced. Industry specialists are invited to keep you up to date with current trends.
