Overview of the Course

This course has been designed to meet the demands of the hairdressing industry and meet the latest educational reforms. Level 2 Technical Certificate in Barbering aims to provide you with a range of essential and practical skills and knowledge, which will lead to employment or further training within the barbering industry. The skills include carrying out services such as; shampooing, conditioning, cutting men’s hair, cutting men’s facial hair, drying and finishing men’s hair and creating basic outlines in the hair.

What are the career opportunities?

This qualification could lead to a job as a Barber working in one of the following establishments: Barbershop, Hairdressing salon, Hotel, Gym. You could progress onto Level 2 Technical Certificate in Hairdressing or into employment in a salon or barber’s shop of your choice.

What are the entry requirements?

Three or more GCSE at grades A*-D, including maths and English at grade 9-3 (A*-D) or a Level 1 Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector and previous experience or 19+.

How long is the course and when can I start?

This is a one year course starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will complete the mandatory assessment components of a theory based exam and a practical synoptic assignment towards the end of the course and additionally will achieve an award in employment involvement. Whilst on your Study Programme, you will achieve the technical skills in the following services: Principles of hairdressing and barbering services, Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp, Cut hair using basic barbering techniques, Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques, Dry and finish hair men’s hair, Create basic outlines and detailing in hair.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

You will develop a range of employability skills including: Customer service skills, dealing with diverse sectors of the public, Organisation and time management skills, Speaking and listening skills, written English language, Maths/numeracy related money, time, estimating.

Work experience

You will complete structured work experience with monitoring visits from Bury College. A record will be kept for all your evidence whilst out on placement.

You will be invited to take part in a range of enrichment opportunities which includes: Competition classes, Master classes with industry experts, Employer input, Trips and visits to industry based activities, Inclusion in sporting/exercise activities, Tutorial sessions covering a range of topical issues including Prevent and British Values.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

A Level 2 kit will cost approximately £126.00. A female uniform will cost £48.75 and consists of a tunic, leggings and ballet shoes. A male uniform will cost £7.50 and consists of a polo shirt. Own smart black trousers and smart black shoes complete the uniform. No trainers or sports shoes are allowed. You should have excellent personal appearance and communication skills, a professional manner, good attitude and commitment to achieve on this course.
