Overview of the Course

This course offers you a chance to study one of seven different vocational pathways at Entry Level 3 in either Animal Care and Land Based Studies, Business, Childcare, Construction, ICT, Performing Arts or Employment. Please note that because of national educational developments, this course may be replaced by a similar programme of study.

Pathway to Animal Care and Land Based Studies Progression: Park Ranger, Game and Wildlife Worker, Farm Worker, Dog Groomer, Environment Worker. Pathway to Business Progression: Administrative Office Clerk, Purchasing Manager, Marketing Professional, Business Owner. Pathway to Childcare Progression: Nursery Nurse, Support Assistant, Learning Mentor, Youth Worker, Childminder. Pathway to Construction Progression: Plasterer, Tiler, Bricklayer, Plumber, Carpenter, Joiner, Electrician. Pathway to Performing Arts Progression: Stage Performer, Dancer, Director, Entertainer, Prop maker, Set Designer. Pathway to Computers and ICT Progression: ICT Technician, IT Engineer, IT Customer Support, Computer Operator, Software Developer. You may progress to a Level 1 programme, apprenticeship, traineeship, internship or employment in their chosen pathway.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry is subject to interview, school/college reference and initial assessment. You should be working at Entry Level 3 and be interested in improving their academic skills, employability skills and confidence. You should be willing to participate in a work experience placement related to the study pathway.

How long is the course and when can I start?

A full-time one year course starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will have the opportunity to achieve an Entry Level 3 NOCN qualification in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development and an additional qualification in their vocational pathway. The course is unit led and the options studied depend on the vocational pathway chosen. Vocational Pathways include: Pathway to Animal Care and Land Based Studies - Caring for and feeding animals, animal accommodation and growing plants. Pathway to Business - Introduction to business, enterprise and business organisation. Pathway to Childcare - Growth and development of young children, play, safeguarding and practical health and safety. Pathway to Construction - Taster units in Bricklaying, Electrical Installation, Plastering, Tiling and Joinery. Pathway to IT – Email, Internet, Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Website Units. Pathway to Performing Arts - Acting skills, performing scripted plays, speaking skills. Pathway to Employment - Work skills, team work skills and tasters in vocational units including catering, art, business and sport. You will also study English and maths, complete a work experience placement and study units to improve employability, personal and social skills. The course will be assessed using a variety of methods including written work, practical activities, role play, presentations, group discussions and tutor statements.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

You will gain specific and transferable employability skills whilst on the course, these may include, working as part of a team, communicating with customers and presenting yourself. You will also develop skills in solving problems, using computer software, understanding instructions, getting things done on time and decision making.

Work experience

Work experience is an essential element of your Study Programme and you will be supported to find a suitable placement thus enabling you to gain the necessary and required employment skills sought after by employers alongside you considering possible future career aspirations.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

Alongside external visits planned as part of the curriculum, you will have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities and sport enrichment sessions. These sessions are optional.
