This course will provide you with an introduction to a career in hairdressing. It will give you a valuable insight into the industry, develop your skills and provide you with relevant industry knowledge. An enthusiasm for hairdressing is essential, in addition to personal qualities of motivation, good communication and dexterity skills. Mature learners are welcome on this course.
Level 1 Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector (hair route) could lead to a job as a salon junior in one of the following; Hairdressing salon, Hotel, Gym. On completion, your progression route could be a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Cutting and Styling, Level 2 Technical Certificate in Barbering, Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty or an apprenticeship in a salon of your choice.
Three or more GCSEs at grades A*-G, including maths and English at grade 9-1 (A*-G).
This course is for a duration of one year and starts in September.
The qualification is based on practical experience.You will work at your own pace throughout the programme and competence will be assessed during the year. Assessments will take place through practical observations, assignments and online theory tests. Each module will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Whilst on your study programme, you will achieve knowledge and skills in the following areas: Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector, Presenting of a Professional Image, Shampooing and Conditioning, Colour in the Hair and Beauty Industry, Styling Women's Hair, Colour and hair using Temporary Colours, The Art of Dressing Hair, Creating a Hair and Beauty Image, Health and Safety, Working with Others.
During the course you will develop skills in customer service, dealing with diverse sectors of the public as well as organisation and time management skills. In addition you will also develop skills in speaking and listening and written English language, as well as maths/numeracy related money, time and estimating.
You will complete structured work experience whilst on your Study Programme.

Additional costs include a Level 1 kit which costs approximately £150.00. A female uniform will cost £48.75 and consists of a tunic, leggings and ballet shoes. Male uniform will cost £7.50 and consists of a polo shirt. Own smart black trousers and smart black shoes complete the uniform. No trainers or sports shoes are allowed. You should have excellent personal appearance and communication skills, a professional manner, good attitude and commitment to achieve on this course.
