Overview of the Course

This qualification is intended for candidates who want to develop CBT skills and theory as an integral part of their professional counselling work. It is designed to enhance the employability of counsellors in organisational settings and as independent practitioners by giving them a solid grounding in CBT skills and theory.

What topics will I study?

The topics covered include:

  • Working safely, legally and ethically as a counsellor using the CBT approach
  • Using the CBT framework to structure the therapeutic relationship
  • Integrating understanding of diversity in CBT work
  • Using a coherent CBT approach to work with individual clients and their needs
  • Working with self-awareness as a counsellor using the CBT approach
  • Using CBT theory, research and techniques coherently within counselling work
  • Monitoring and maintaining professional effectiveness as a counsellor using the CBT approach
  • Counselling placement (minimum of 30 hours one-to-one client work).
  • Supervision (the course will include group training supervision in addition to the candidate‚Äôs own supervision arrangements for their external work as per BACP/BABCP minimum requirements).

  • The course is aimed at obtaining and securing employment within the counselling field.
  • Course for those who have completed a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.

Progression

Successful completion of this qualification can lead to Postgraduate and Post qualifying course in counselling studies and specialist counsellor training, e.g. Diploma in Hypnotherapy, Diploma in Working with Children and Young People.

What are the entry requirements?

You are required to have a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or the RPL (recognised prior learning) equivalent. There is also group and individual interviews prior to admission and information sessions regarding experiential learning and interaction with others and self. You are also required to complete an application form and provide references from previous level 4 tutors.

Attendance

You are expected to attend a 4 hour weekly class (days of delivery to be confirmed). In addition, you will complete client contact hours outside of the course time and supervision.

Costs

to be confirmed. Supervision costs are individually agreed between student and supervisee and covered by the individual.
