This Level 3 Diploma will suit you if you already have a good understanding of basic plumbing knowledge and skills. The qualification focuses on the development of the underlying principles and practical skills required in the Plumbing sector. It is designed to deliver a high level of occupational skills and provide a sound platform from which to progress onto a higher education qualification, apprenticeship or into employment. The course will also enhance your ability to work to deadlines and increase your speed in the workshop. Excellent organisational and time management skills will be developed through working to strict deadlines to complete practical projects. You may also have an opportunity to develop skills in a different trade such as joinery or plastering. You will also carry out a work placement as part of your studies as well as having opportunities to be involved in external local community projects.
On successful completion of your course you could progress on to a Plumbing Apprenticeship or employment. Many exciting career opportunities include plumbing, heating engineer, gas engineer and drainage specialist. Other opportunities include bcoming a domestic plumbing, heating engineer, industrial plumber, drainage specialist or maintenance engineer. Construction offers huge employment potential for learners interested in the sector. It contributes £90bn to the UK economy, 6.7% of the total, with over 2.9 million jobs in over 280,000 businesses. The global construction output is forecast to increase from around $8.5 trillion today to $12 trillion in 2025. Construction employment is very diverse ranging from single home repairs to working on major infrastructure developments.

A full-time one-year course starting in September
The qualification is assessed through a series of practical assignments and online multiple choice examinations and four written projects set by City & Guilds and marked by the tutor. You will be guided and supported as you move through the programme to achieve the Level 3 Diploma and regular feedback will ensure you always know how well you are performing. All learners will complete the mandatory units within the qualification and will need to undertake the following units: • Understand the Fundamental Principles and Requirements of Environmental Technology Systems • Plumbing system installation planning • Complex cold water systems • Domestic hot water • Sanitation and drainage systems • Central heating systems • Domestic gas principles • Career awareness in building services engineering
To be successful in a construction career you will need to get on with people from all walks of life, enjoy being part of a team and like working outdoors for some of the time. You will also be good at solving problems, using computer software, understanding instructions, getting things done on time and making decisions. English and communication skills are particularly important; you need to be able to listen carefully to identify the needs of customers, respond effectively to questions in an open and friendly manner and maintain written records of work completed. Carrying out calculations and problem solving is a daily feature of working in the construction sector, you will need to be able to accurately calculate the quantity and cost of materials from drawings, measure and set out to precise requirements and work to critical project timelines. You will also need to apply rations and formulae to standard units of weight, length, time and cost to prepare estimates and final costings.
Work experience is an essential element of your study programme and you will be supported to secure a 5-day work experience placement during term 2. This will allow you to gain first hand exposure to the sector you wish to work in, start to develop key employability skills and most importantly confirm your career goals. Your Construction Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression to employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, course related study visits and career events.
You are required to purchase PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that you must wear in all practical sessions; this will include a hi-visibility vest, a pair of gloves and safety goggles, all available to purchase from college at enrolment. In addition, you will also need to purchase a pair of steel toe capped boots.
