Overview of the Course

This course gives you the opportunity to study to be a Dental Nurse. You will spend two days in college and 16 hours per week on a placement where you will provide support during a range of dental treatments.

You may progress onto a wide range of carrers including Dental Nursing, Oral Hygienist, Practice Management and Dental Technician.

What are the entry requirements?

Four or more GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language A*-C (9-4).

How long is the course and when can I start?

The course is for one year commencing in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through coursework, four exams and observation of your skills whilst on placement. You will have the opportunity to study both GCSE maths and English.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

To be successful on this course you will need to be able to engage with people of different backgrounds and treat them in a professional and caring manner. You will need to be able to work as part of a team, yet also learn to make decisions and work on your own initiative. You will need to be hardworking and dedicated to caring for others and be able to follow instructions. English and communication skills are vital. You need to be able to communicate clearly with people from all different walks of life and you may have to overcome some communication barriers. You need to be able to listen closely to service users members of the team and know how to respond effectively to their requests. As well as verbal communication, written skills are essential as accurate record keeping is vitally important. Maths also plays a key role. You will need to manage your time effectively. In some roles, you will also need to be aware of measurements required for treatments and procedures.

Work experience

Work experience is a mandatory part of this course and you will complete 16 hours per week in a Dental Practice where you will have the opportunity to provide support on a range of dental treatments and you will be observed in placement.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

There will be many enrichments opportunities throughout your time on the course such as guest speakers from within the Health and Social Care sector and course related visits and careers events. You will also be able to take part in sport and fitness activities and charity events. You would also have the opportunity to join the Student Action Group, which gives students the chance to be the voice of their peers.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

A DBS check is required for placement, Bury College will cover the cost of this. Bury College will provide you with a placement uniform.
