Overview of the Course

These courses aim to equip those wanting a career in the media industries with the knowledge and production skills required for higher education and employment. Work placements, industry visits (e.g. BBC, British Film Institute masterclasses) and guest speakers form part of a fast-paced exciting course. Depending on your career aspirations and qualifications you will either complete a one year Diploma or a two year Extended Diploma. We can discuss this with you at your interview. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels.

What are the career opportunities?

The UK’s creative industries are worth £85 billion a year to the economy, generating £9.6 million per hour. The industry spans a variety of production work from high profile film productions to digital marketing campaigns. Job roles can be as varied as camera operator to web designer. You will learn that media production requires a wide range of different skills including administrative, editorial, design, communication and financial. Whether you wish to work as a journalist, camera operator, marketer or screenwriter, it is key that you are able to write well and have a good level of mathematical skills.

What are the entry requirements?

Five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English 9-4 (A*-C). This is also a successful progression route for those that have completed the Level 2 Creative Digital Media Extended Certificate.

How long is the course and when can I start?

A full-time one year course starting in September, becoming two years if you progress onto the Extended Diploma.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will complete a combination of mandatory and optional units all assessed by coursework assignments set by your tutors. You will produce a variety of media products, reports, presentations, group work and case studies. These will include media products such as DVD covers, magazines, websites, television and marketing campaigns using professional production management techniques. Mandatory units include: Pre-production, Communication Skills, Research Techniques, Understanding the Creative Media Industries, Creative Media Production Management, Working to a Brief, Critical Approaches. Optional units include: Film and Video Editing Techniques, Single Camera Techniques, Television and Video Studies, Film Studies, Page Layout and Design, Digital Graphics for Print, Print-Based Media, Writing for Television, Marketing and PR Factual Programme Production, Music Video Production, Web Authoring. Each unit will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Your final 90-Credit qualification will have two grades in the range of PP to D*D* and can achieve up to 84 UCAS points. Should you continue on to the Extended Diploma, you will be graded PPP to D*D*D* worth up to 168 UCAS points, the equivalent of three A* grade A Levels.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

You will be taught how to create different media products using professional equipment and learn what is required to work professionally across various media production occupations in television, video production, print design, web design and marketing. This includes developing your own career portfolio and gaining an understanding of how the media industries operate. You will gain skills using editing (Final Cut Pro X), graphic design, page layout software (Adobe Master Suite) and be trained to use professional filming equipment. You will become familiar with working to professional standards of which teamwork is a key skill in all media production, whether creating a television drama or running a marketing campaign. You will learn to work together with different people in a variety of production roles in order to meet your deadlines. How well you plan your time and organise resources is crucial to delivering your final productions for when the client expects it, and within budget. Good communication skills are essential as you learn to present your ideas to clients. Being able to write well will enable you to complete reports, compile presentations, draft screenplays and proof copy – all part of producing media content. Whether it be budgets, timings, marketing reports or the various technical requirements needed in video and design work, you will be using calculations regularly as a part of working in the media production. Across the course you will develop all of these career skills.

Work experience is highly valued by media professionals, businesses and the industry as a whole. It is therefore an essential element of your Study Programme. You will be supported to secure a work experience placement that fits with your career aspirations. This will allow you to gain first hand exposure to the sector you wish to work in, begin to develop key employability skills and help focus your career goals. Over recent years, Media Production students have had successful work experience placements with the following employers: BBC, ITV, Key 103 FM, Bolton FM, Smooth FM, Radcliffe Borough FC, Wallace Printing and Communica8te.

Your Media Production Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression to employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, course related study visits and careers events.
