Overview of the Course

This two year course is delivered in partnership with the Pennine Acute Trust. You will spend three days a week in college working towards the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Sciences) and two days on a clinical placement gaining valuable hands-on work experience. The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma provides much of the underpinning knowledge for the National Occupational Standards in Health and Social Care. The units studied are mapped to the NHS knowledge and skills Framework, which sets out how NHS staff roles are defined and developed.

All branches of nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, radiography, physiotherapy.

What are the entry requirements?

Five or more GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language, mathematics and core and additional science 9-4 (A*-C).

How long is the course and when can I start?

The course is for a duration of two years starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

The course consists of a range of mandatory, specialist and optional units studied over one or two years. You will be assessed by assignments set and marked by your tutors. Each individual unit is graded Pass (P), Merit (M), or Distinction (D) and your overall qualification for the two year Extended Diploma will have three grades from PPP to D*D*D*. You will study: Equality and diversity, effective communication, health safety and security, lifespan development, anatomy and physiology, personal and professional development, sociological perspectives, psychological perspectives, promoting health education, health psychology, caring for children and young people, physiological disorders, physiology of fluid balance, biochemistry for health, counselling and vocational experience.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

To be successful in the Health and Social Care sector you need to be able to engage with people of all different backgrounds and treat them in a professional and caring manner. You will need to be able to work as part of a team, yet also learn to be make decisions and work on your own initiative. You will have to need to be hardworking and dedicated to caring for others and be able to follow instructions. In Health and Social Care, English and communication skills are vital. You need to be able to communicate clearly with people from all different walks of life and you may have to overcome some communication barriers. You need to be able to listen closely to service users and know how to respond effectively to their requests. As well as verbal communication, written skills are essential as accurate record keeping in Health and Social Care is vitally important. Maths also plays a key role in the Health and Social Care sector. You will need to manage your time effectively as often shift work is involved. In some roles, you will also need to be aware of measurements required for medicine and be able to work out the frequency of a service user’s medication.

Work experience

Work experience is a mandatory part of this course and you will complete a six week induction with the NHS before starting your clinical placements within the Pennine Acute Trust on a variety of NHS wards and departments. These may include Maternity, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Theatre, Community, Occupational Therapy and Radiotherapy.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

There will be many enrichment opportunities throughout your time on the course such as guest speakers from within the Health and Social Care sector and course related visits and careers events. You will also be able to take part in sport and fitness activities and charity events. You may also have the opportunity to join the Student Action Group, which gives students the chance to be the voice of their peers.

DBS check for placement which Bury College will cover the cost of this. Bury College will provide you with a placement uniform.
