Depending on your career aspirations and qualifications you will either complete a one year Extended Certificate/Foundation Diploma or a two year Diploma/Extended Diploma. We can discuss this with you at your interview. This course prepares you for a wide range of careers in the sport sector. The course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the sport sector. The main focus of the course is developing the key knowledge and underlying skills needed for employment in the diverse sports industry. This is supported by the embedded work experience aspects of the course.
The sports industry is continually growing and is predicted to contribute £16.5 billion pounds into the economy by 2018 at a time when 95% of consumers spend money on leisure activities. This is creating a broad range of career opportunities for the suitably qualified including; Sports Coaching, Fitness Training, Dieticians, Sports Psychologists, Teachers, Sports Managers and Sports Development officers. A significant proportion of recruitment in the sports sector is at graduate level and this course will allow entry to a range of full time Degree and Foundation Degree programmes.
Five or more GCSE’s at grades 9-4, including English Language and maths at grade 9-4. This is a progression course if you have completed a Level 2 Extended Certificate in sport. It is essential that you are involved in a current sporting activity, for example a member of a sports club/team outside of the college.
This a full time one year course, with the chance to progress on to a second year Extended Diploma in Sport.
You will complete a combination of internally and externally assessed units. These vary from Examinations, Controlled Assessments and Internal Assessments ranging from reports, practical assessments and presentations. Assessments are graded Pass (P), Merit (M) and Distinction (D). Units Covered include; Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training, Professional Development in Sport, Sports Leadership, Application of Fitness Testing, Sports Psychology, Practical Sports Performance and Work Experience.
To be successful in a sports career you will need to get on with people from all walks of life, enjoy being part of a team and like working outdoors for some of the time. You will also be good at solving problems, using computer software, understanding instructions, getting things done on time and making decisions. English and communication skills are particularly important, you need to be able to listen carefully to identify the needs of clients, respond effectively to questions in an open and friendly manner and maintain written records of work completed. Completing calculations is an important part in many areas of sports, from calorie content for nutrition to timing calculations for working with sports performers. Statistical analysis of a person’s health in terms of blood pressure, body fat percentage and BMI. Maths is also important for fitness training in terms of exercise prescription.
Work experience is an essential element of your Study Programme and you will be supported to secure a five day work experience placement during term two. This will allow you to gain first hand exposure to the sector you wish to work in, start to develop key employability skills and most importantly confirm your career goals. Sports students have recently had successful work experience placements in the following areas: Education, Fitness Industry, Sport Therapy, Professional Coaching and Outdoor Recreation.
Your Sports Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression to employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, and course related study visits and careers events.
You will be required to purchase a full sports kit at an approximate cost of £110. This is required for all practical sports activities. You may be required to pay for participation in study visits. You will be required to participate in the full range of sporting activities offered by the college and will be actively encouraged to participate in enrichment activities outside of college time. You will need to participate in a five day work experience placement and you must also be prepared to commit to 15 hours of private self-study per week.
