The course prepares you for a wide range of careers in the sport sector and will provide you with a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the sports sector. The main focus of the course is developing the key knowledge and underlying skills needed for employment in a diverse sports industry.
The sports industry is continually growing and is predicted to contribute £16.5 billion pounds into the economy by 2018 at a time when 95% of consumers spend money on leisure activities. This is creating a broad range of career opportunities for the suitably qualified including; Sports Coaching, Fitness Training, Dieticians, Sports Psychologists, Teachers, Sports Managers and Sports Development officers. A significant proportion of recruitment in the sports sector is at graduate level and this course will allow entry to a range of full time Degree and Foundation Degree programmes.
A Level college entry requirements including English Language and maths at grade 9-4. It is recommended that you are involved in current sporting activity, for example a member of a sports club/team outside of the college.
This is a full time one year course, with the chance to progress on to a second year Extended Certificate which is equivalent to one A Level.
You will complete a combination of internally and externally assessed units. These vary from examinations, controlled assessments and internal assessments ranging from reports, practical assessments and presentations. Assessments are graded Pass (P), Merit (M) and Distinction (D). You will cover a range of units. During year one you will cover Anatomy and Physiology and Practical Sports Performance. During year two you will cover Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being and Professional Development in the Sports Industry.
To have a successful sports career you will need to get on with people from all walks of life, enjoy being part of a team and like working outdoors. You will also be good at solving problems, using computer software, understanding instructions, getting things completed on time and making decisions. English and communication skills are particularly important, you need to be able to listen carefully to identify the needs of clients, respond effectively to questions in an open and friendly manner and maintain written records of work completed. Completing calculations is an important part in many areas of sports, from calorie content for nutrition to timing calculations for working with sports performers. Statistical analysis of a person’s health in terms of blood pressure, body fat percentage and BMI. Maths is also important for fitness training in terms of exercise prescription.
Your Sport Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression to employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, and course related study visits and careers events.
You will be required to purchase a full sports kit at an approximate cost of £25. This is required for all practical sports activities. You may be required to pay for participation in study visits. You will be required to participate in the full range of sporting activities offered by the college and will be actively encouraged to participate in enrichment activities outside of college time.
