Overview of the Course

This work-related qualification will give you knowledge, understanding and competency needed for entering employment in the public service sector, including the Armed Forces, emergency services and local authority jobs. Throughout the course you will develop an understanding of public services and how they fit into modern society. You will identify and practice different skills that the public services use, as well as learning about the affect of crime and about society and citizenship. You will also participate in practical units including learning to navigate using a map and compass, search techniques and various sport and fitness associated activities. To be successful on the course you will need to be able to solve problems, meet deadlines, work in a team and keep fit. A commitment to studying on a full–time course is essential.

What are the career opportunities?

There are opportunities to speak to staff who have had a previous career in a public service and to speak to serving public service personnel during visits. You will also be required to research the roles and the work they do, of selected public services.

What are the entry requirements?

The entry requirements are a positive reference and a minimum of three or more GCSEs at grades A*-D and English Language at a minimum of Level 3 GCSE.

How long is the course and when can I start?

The course runs for one year and starts in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through the successful completion of coursework for seven units and for the remaining two units there are end of unit exams.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

During the course you will study and practice search techniques, develop your teamwork, and communication skills. You will be required to write assignments in a clear, well laid-out format and using acceptable levels of spelling and grammar. In certain assignment and classroom activities, you will practice math skills to calculate distance travelled, the time it will take to travel the distance and collecting information from statistics on populations.

Work experience

You will be required to organise for yourself at least two weeks work experience outside of college time. Ideally, this would be with a Public Service related organisation, but it is accepted that this is not always possible.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

The course can include numerous visits to external agencies and establishments to augment the various lessons and activities in college as well as visiting lecturers coming to college. These visits have included Bury Fire Station, the Fire Service Training Centre and Burrs Activity Centre, with personnel from the Marines, Prison Service and the Royal Navy coming in to college. Social enrichment trips have also been organised in previous years to Altrincham Ice Rink and Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

You will need a sport kit for the physical activities, which can be purchased if required during enrolment prior or at the start of the course. You will also need walking boots (or army style boots) for the map reading practical.
