Overview of the Course

This is a specialist qualification which provides you with the opportunity to develop key transferable skills through both core and sector units whilst providing a progression pathway onto Level 2. On completion of this course, you will have developed a set of transferable and sector skills that will benefit you with your chosen progression route. Transferable skills covered include; communication skills, working with others, problem solving, managing information, self-management and personal development.

What are the entry requirements?

Five or more GCSEs at grades 9-2 (A*-E)

How long is the course and when can I start?

A full-time one year course starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will complete a combination of diverse units. Assessment methods include written assignments, verbal and practical assessments.

  • Researching a Topic
  • Responding to an Incident
  • Contributing to your Community
  • Keeping Active and Healthy
  • Playing Sport
  • Exploring Local Attractions
  • Developing Digital Information using IT

 Each unit will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Your final qualification will have two grades in the range PP to DD.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

To be successful in a public service career you will need to get on with people from all walks of life, enjoy being part of a team and like working outdoors. You will also be good at solving problems, using computer software, understanding instructions, getting things done on time and making decisions. English and communication skills are particularly important, you need to be able to listen carefully to identify the needs of customers and victims, respond effectively to questions in an open and friendly manner and maintain written records of work completed.

Work experience

At Bury College you will benefit from work experience as an essential element of your study programme. You will be supported to secure a five day work experience placement allowing you to gain hands-on work based industry skills.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

Your Public Service Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression to a Level 2 qualification. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, course related study visits and careers events.

Are there any additional costs or requirements?

There may be additional costs for trips and visits. A sports kit is also optional.
