This course is an ideal starting point if you are considering a career in the sports sector. If you have a genuine interest in all aspects of sport then this course will develop your knowledge and skills further, turning your passion for sport into a rewarding career in the sport and leisure industry.
The sports industry is continually growing and is predicted to contribute £16.5 billion pounds into the economy by 2018 at a time when 95% of consumers spend money on leisure activities. This is creating a broad range of career opportunities for those who are suitably qualified. While studying Level 1 Sport you will begin to develop your organisational skills which will give you a great foundation to be successful. You will learn how to be a team player by developing your listening skills and verbal communication. After successful completion of the course, you may progress onto a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport course or employment. Those who do not progress could choose a variety of career roles such as leisure assistant, assistant sports coach or could become involved in the administration of sport and leisure.
Four or more GCSE’s, including English Language at grade 9-2 (A-E).
A full-time one year course starting in September.
You will complete a wide variety of units, covering a range of sporting professions. You will be assessed using a variety of styles to help to develop a broad range of transferrable skills, including: Carrying out practical tasks, Presenting information they have gathered, Keep working log-books, records and journals,Practice English and mathematical skills, Take part in oral and written presentations, Take part in role play, interviews and other activities. Units studied include: Being organised, Developing a Personal Professional Plan, Working with Others, Researching a Topic, Playing Sport, Coaching Skills in Sport, How Exercise Effects the Body, Training for Fitness, Assisting a Sports Activity and Getting People Active.
On completion of your course you will have developed a set of transferrable and sector skills that will benefit you with your chosen progression route. These transferrable skills cover communication, setting common goals, showing respect, listening to others in the team, taking on roles and responsibilities, problem solving, decision making, using IT, collecting and using information, organising information, self-management and development, time-management, monitoring performance and devising strategies for improvement.
Work experience is an essential element of your Study Programme and you will be supported to secure a five-day work experience placement during term two. This will allow you to gain first hand exposure to the sector you wish to work in, start to develop key employability skills and most importantly confirm your career goals. Sports students have recently had successful work experience placements in the following areas: Education, Fitness Industry, Sport Therapy, Professional Coaching, Outdoor Recreation.
Your Sport Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression onto a Level 2 course, employment or an apprenticeship. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, course related study visits and careers events.
Participation in practical sport will be an essential part of the course. You will be encouraged to participate in the full range of sporting opportunities offered at Bury College. You may be selected to represent the college in local and national leagues or in other sports competitions. A sports uniform for practical sessions will have to be purchased; this will cost approximately £110. You will also need to pay up to £25 to participate in the study visit programme, which you are required to attend. You must also commit to a minimum of two-three hours per week of self-study time.
