Overview of the Course

If you would like a creative career in men’s grooming that has opportunities for career progression, self-employment or owning your own company, then the barbering apprenticeships provides an ideal way to begin working in this industry. This apprenticeship trains you to cut and style the hair of men and boys. You will be working closely with clients and will need the ability to put them at ease and be pleasant and personable. This programme covers a range of mandatory units to develop advanced skills and knowledge of barbering. The course covers a range of areas including - Mandatory units: Monitor procedures to safely control work operations, Promote additional services or products to clients, Provide hairdressing consultation services, Design and create a range of facial hair shapes, Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques. Optional units: Providing shaving and head massage services, Colouring hair using a variety of techniques, Developing and enhancing your creative hairdressing skills, Providing colour correction services. This course will involve 20% of your time to be dedicated to off the job training.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are a vital part of your apprenticeship. They provide the essential knowledge, skills and understanding needed to operate confidently, effectively and independently. Functional skills are available at Level 1 and Level 2 and the level you will work towards will depend on the previous qualifications you have achieved, the results of an assessment prior to your apprenticeship and the requirements of the apprenticeship you are completing. If you have not already achieved Level 2 English and maths you must study for and take the tests for Level 2 English and maths and achieve Level 1 English and maths for Level 2 Apprenticeship.

Assessment

As well as the college attendance which is one evening a week, your assessor will visit you on a regular basis and support you with developing your electronic portfolio which is used as evidence for your end point assessment. At these meetings observations, question and answer sessions and reviews will take place.
