Overview of the Course

This course will provide you with a basic introduction to the occupational areas within the construction industry including four of the following trades; Bricklaying, Plastering, Carpentry and Joinery, Plumbing and Electrical Installation. The course will provide an insight into the industry, organisations and job roles. You will be required to complete a range of practical projects and develop your skills and knowledge through studying a range of units including Health and Safety and Carrying Out Operations. You will have the opportunity to practise the skills you learn. Approximately 80% of the course is based in workshops and 20% is theory. The course is designed to provide you with the skills to progress onto a Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying, Plastering, Carpentry and Joinery, Plumbing or Electrical Installation. You will also carry out a two week work placement as part of your studies.

What are the career opportunities?

Upon successful completion of this course you may progress onto a Level 1 Diploma in whichever discipline you choose to study; Bricklaying, Plastering, Tiling, Carpentry and Joinery, Plumbing and Electrical Installation. Following this you may go onto complete Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas in your chosen discipline.

What are the entry requirements?

Four or more GCSEs at grades A*-E including English and maths A*-E (9-2).

How long is the course and when can I start?

One year starting in September.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

Achievement of the mandatory unit ‘Introduction to Construction Work’ is internally assessed through building up a portfolio of evidence. Other units are assessed by a series of questions produced by Ascentis and managed by the lecturer. To gain the award you must be successful in all units.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

To be successful in a construction career you will need to get along with people from all walks of life, enjoy being part of a team and like working outdoors for some of the time. You will also be good at solving problems, using computer software, understanding instructions, getting things done on time and making decisions. English and communication skills are particularly important, you need to be able to listen carefully to identify the needs of customers, respond effectively to questions in an open and friendly manner and maintain written records of work completed. Carrying out calculations and problem solving is a daily feature of working in the construction sector, you will need to be able to accurately calculate the quantity and cost of materials from drawings, measure and set out to precise requirements and work to critical project timelines. You will also need to apply ratios and formulae to standard units of weight, length time and cost to prepare estimates and final costings.

Work experience

Work experience is an essential element of your Study Programme and you will be supported to secure a five day work experience placement during the second term. This will allow you to gain first hand exposure to the sector you wish to work in, start to develop key employability skills and most importantly confirm your career goals. Construction students have recently completed successful work experience placements with the following employers: Kaberry Building, Carefoot plc, Six Town Housing, Seddon Construction, Travis Perkins and Cruden Construction.

Your Construction Study Programme will support personal development to ensure you make good progress and acquire the skills required for successful progression onto employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. You will have the opportunity to take part in fundraising events, sport and fitness activities, course related study visits and careers events.
