Overview of the Course

Develop your critical thinking and awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes. You will learn about the structures of authority and power in the UK examining areas of legislature, executive and the judiciary. You will also have the opportunity perfect your debating skills and improve your knowledge of the political system in the UK in comparison to other countries such as the US. The course offers a good comparison or alternative to History, Law or Economics A Levels.

What are the career opportunities?

This course will help to prepare you for study at degree level, after which you can consider a range of career options in government or political administration, including the Civil Service.

What are the entry requirements?

College requirements for AS/A Levels are six GCSEs at or above grade C/4 including two subjects or more at or above grade B/5, one being GCSE English grade 9-4 (A*-C). A minimum of 9 grade points are required from maths and English combined.

How long is the course and when can I start?

The A Level Study Programme is for usually two years and starts in September of each year.

How is the course structured and how will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through exams. There is no coursework.

What employability skills will I develop on this course?

On an A Level Study Programme, you will develop specialist knowledge, skills relevant to the subject you are studying. All A Level Study Programme subjects will develop your English and communication skills. Many will also develop technical and numerical skills. All of these are transferable to any higher education and employment fields. In addition, an A Level Study Programme can develop your critical thinking skills more effectively than any other course of study. You will be exposed to a wide range of complex concepts and ideas to provoke and stimulate you, and you will have high level thinking skills that are valued in all employment fields and that will support your higher education and career goals.

Work experience

All students on A Level Study Programmes will participate in a week’s work experience in each year of their course. This work experience will be tailored as far as possible to your career aims, or provide you with the opportunity to explore possible careers if you are unsure of your future goals.

Study programme enrichment opportunities

A range of enrichment activities are available in college and the A Level Study Programme team will provide you with opportunities to do activities that contribute to your wider growth and development and in many cases will support your academic studies by allowing you to explore things that are related to the subject areas that you are interested in.
