On this course you will discover how businesses operate and explore the vital role that they can play within society. Amongst other things, you will find out: What you need to do to become a successful entrepreneur, what makes a successful marketing campaign, how to employ the right people and then how to motivate them, how international brands get their products made and into stores, how business can make lots of money but still be ethical and kind to the environment. You will learn how to problem solve, think independently and make decisions such as whether a business should launch a new product, enter a new market or takeover another company.
AS and A Level Business Studies offer you a high degree of versatility in your career choice and provide an ideal foundation if you are aiming to study a business related degree at university. The course can lead onto careers in: Management, Marketing, Human Resources, Finance and Accounting, Production and International Business.
To study three AS Levels or two AS Levels and one Applied Qualification then the entry requirements are six GCSEs at or above grade C/4 including three subjects or more at or above grade C/5. To study Business your grades must include GCSE maths and English Language grade 9-4 (A*-C).
Should you wish to study four AS Levels the entry requirements are six GCSEs at or above grade C/4 including two subjects or more at or above grade C/5 and two subjects or more at or above B/6.
In addition to the above a minimum of 9 grade points are required from maths and English combined.
1 year for AS and a further 1 year for a full A Level, starting in September.
At AS Level you will study two components. Component 1 – Business Opportunities is a one hour paper and worth 40% of the marks. Component 2 – Business Functions is a two hour examination worth 60% of the AS qualification. At A2 Level you will have three exams each worth 33% and lasting just over two hours. Component 1 - Business Opportunities and Function (the two AS elements are combined and re-assessed). Component 2 - Business Analysis and Strategy. Component 3 - Business in a Changing World.
A Level Business will develop your English and communication skills as well as numerical skills. All of these skills are highly valued by higher education institutions or the ‘world of work’.
You will have the opportunity to participate in a week’s work experience in each year of the course. This work experience will be tailored as far as possible to your career aims, or provide you with the opportunity to explore possible careers. In addition, it provides opportunity to develop valuable skills for a personal statement or CV.
A range of enrichment activities are available in college and your A Level Study Programme team will provide you with opportunities to do activities that contribute to your wider growth and development. During your academic studies you will explore things that are related to the subject areas that you are interested in.
