How do I apply for an apprenticeship?

Do I need to be a certain age to complete an apprenticeship?

You will need to be aged 16 or over.

Are there entry requirements?

Apprenticeship programmes require a level of English and Maths that you may already have.

I don’t have a job. Can I complete an apprenticeship?

If you are looking for a job our Employment Gateway can help match you with a suitable position. You will be allocated a personal employment advisor for 12 weeks who will help you to write job applications and a CV, prepare for interviews and keep you up-to-date with job vacancies.

I already have a job. Can I still complete an apprenticeship?

Yes. If you already have a job speak to your employer about your interest in an apprenticeship. We will work together with you and your employer to agree the appropriate apprenticeship and develop a training plan that will help you to develop and progress in your current role.

Which level is most suitable to me?

Bury College offers apprenticeships at level 2 and 3 and higher apprenticeships at level 4 and 5. We will work with you to ensure you are on the level most appropriate to your skills and job role. The table below shows the different levels:




Apprenticeship Level 2 This is equivalent to five GCSEs grade A-C.
Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 This is equivalent to two A levels.
Higher Apprenticeship Level 4 and 5 This is equivalent to a Higher Education Certificate or Foundation Degree.


When can I start?

Most apprenticeships are available to start immediately if you are applying for one of our job vacancies. Please contact us for more details on the apprenticeship you are interested in. We can support you to find a job if there are no current vacancies in your preferred apprenticeship.

What support will I get?

A dedicated, specialist assessor will visit you regularly at work to support your learning. Your assessor will also provide support via your e-portfolio as your training and job develops.

Do I need to attend college?

Apprenticeships are usually gained within the workplace and a Bury College assessor will visit you to provide support. However, depending on the apprenticeship and your individual needs, there are opportunities to attend college on a day release basis, or to prepare for any tests that you may need to complete. This will be discussed with you and your employer and we aim to offer as much flexibility and choice as possible.
