Information Technology Suites
Bury College has two curriculum networks:
PC Network
The PC network is a nine server network based on a MS Windows 2003 Server which serves:
- Ten IT suites at the Millennium Centre
- Ten IT suites at the Woodbury Centre
- Two IT suites at the Prospects Centre
- Four IT suites at the Beacon Centre
- One IT suite (Online Testing) at the Aspire Centre
Apple Mac Network
The Apple Mac network running OS 10.x serves:
- One Apple Mac (Music) IT suite at the Millennium Centre
- Two Apple Mac (Art/Media) IT suites at the Woodbury Centre
At present across our five centres we have approximately 900+ client PCs, which are of a spec up to Intel® Core® 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM, connected to the network. The network is based around the MS Windows 2003 Server operating system on all the servers, with MS Windows XP Professional on all the client PCs. We also have an Apple Mac Network running OS 10.x linked to 100+ Apple Macs which serves the Art and Media IT suites at the Woodbury Centre, including the Music IT suite at the Millennium Centre.
We have around 4000+ users on the networks, all of whom have their own password-protected user areas in which to save work. All users have access to the latest scanners and colour printers in the Open Access Areas of the college.
The curriculum networks are supported by the IT Services Team which consists of:
- Business Support Director of IT Services
- Senior System Support Officer
- (4) System Support Officers
- Technical Support Officers
The College subscribes to Microsoft Campus Licence which allows us to provide all students with access to the latest Microsoft software. In addition we have multiple licences for various multimedia and educational software packages which are available throughout all the Centres.
Because it is vital to maintain links with the outside world, Bury College has a 100 Mbit/s Internet connection to JANET, which provides connectivity for all the five centres, including the external Business Solutions Centre (Link House). This connection provides 24/7 Internet connectivity for all our staff and students.
