Vocational Student Wins National Award

Alison Healey has scooped the BTEC Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Student of the Year 2018 accolade at this year’s BTEC Awards.

18-year-old Alison attended the awards ceremony in London at Central Hall Westminster where 24 winners were recognised in a wide range of subject areas. These annual awards celebrates excellence in vocational education across schools, colleges and universities across the country.

The Level 3 Travel and Tourism student was nominated for this award by her tutors for her ongoing passion, dedication and commitment to her studies.

The former St James’s Church of England High School pupil said, “I am so happy to have won this award! I know that there are many people who deserve to receive this award, so I am very grateful to have been chosen, it was an exciting surprise. I appreciate all the guidance, support and inspirational teaching from my tutors, family and friends which has helped me to be the happy person I am. Winning this award gives me confidence, and opportunities to be successful in the future.”

The inspirational awards ceremony was attended by winners and their families and they were joined by stakeholders from the education and business worlds as well as entrepreneurs, MPs and celebrities.

It was a truly inspirational event which reinforced how significant BTEC qualifications are in preparing learners for the world of work and higher education. Alison was ranked amongst the most highly regarded BTEC learners across the UK and it is testament to all her hard work, dedication and commitment, along with the supportive teaching team who have encouraged her throughout her learning journey at Bury College. 52 expert judges made up the panel and the ceremony was hosted by journalist and TV presenter Steph McGovern.
