STUDENTS TACKLE WORKSHOPS AT GREATER MANCHESTER FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

Public services students with the Greater Manchester Fire Department

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service gave Bury College Public Services students an insight into a career within the fire service during a three week work experience module.

During a careers related module, Level 1 Public Services students gained skills to help them with career progression. Students received training on how to use and operate different equipment. This included hose pipes and how to apply them on different size buildings.

Maciej Szarkowski, a former The Derby High School pupil said of the workshop sessions, “I really enjoyed learning how to use the different equipment and finding out more about the job of a firefighter. Once I complete my Public Services diploma at Bury College I would like a career in the police or fire service. This was a great opportunity to see the different jobs first-hand.”

Tony Dalpiaz, Watch Manager at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was on hand to offer students advise during the sessions and teach them basic principles. Tony said, “The workshops were a great way for students from the local Bury community to meet firefighters and ask questions about the different roles. These sessions give them a head start of the requirements needed to progress into the industry.”
