A LEVEL ALUMNI EMBARKS ON INTERNATIONAL PHD

A Level Alumni Embarks on International PhD

A former A* Bury College A Level student has undertaken a PhD in Germany having completed his degree and obtained his masters at the University of Oxford.

Daniel Kennedy left Bury College in 2013 after securing four A* grades in A Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. The former Parrenthorn High School pupil progressed onto Merton College, The University of Oxford to read Mathematics. From there, Daniel obtained a Distinction in his Masters in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics which then led him on to his PhD in theoretical plasma physics at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Germany.

22 year old Daniel is hoping that his PhD will lead him to a career within academia in a research or teaching post having identified a passion for research during his time at university. Whilst at the University of Oxford, Daniel, who is originally from Prestwich, was given the opportunity to study under and work alongside leading academics. As a result, Daniel has had two academic papers published with a third paper currently under review.

Daniel is grateful for the opportunities he received at Bury College which he believes led him to study at one of the top universities in the world. Daniel said, “Being thrust into the world of research during my time at the University of Oxford has really driven my desire to become an academic myself. I feel my time at Bury College instilled in me a passion for my subject which is very much the driving force behind my career.”

Daniel, who’s two brothers also studied A Levels at Bury College, believes that the teaching and support he received at Bury College very much prepared him for his higher education journey. Daniel added, “The staff and teaching provision at Bury College was absolutely outstanding. I feel that every teacher I had really pushed me to strive for the best and went above and beyond the call of duty in helping support my academic development and University applications. The teaching at Bury College was second to none.
